Delta sleep-inducing peptide (DSIP) is a small neuropeptide used as a reference compound in laboratory research. This guide covers where it came from, its sequence, storage points that follow from its chemistry, and what the independent report on our 5 mg vial found. It describes chemistry only, not effects in people or animals.

Where the name comes from

DSIP was isolated in 1977 by a research group in Basel, Switzerland. The name comes from the experiments in which it was first described, which recorded “delta” (slow-wave) activity in the brain. Its biological role has remained a subject of research ever since, and the name reflects its history rather than an established function.

Sequence

DSIP is a nonapeptide, a chain of nine amino acids:

Trp-Ala-Gly-Gly-Asp-Ala-Ser-Gly-Glu

  • One-letter code: WAGGDASGE.
  • Molecular formula C35H48N10O15, molecular weight about 848.8 g/mol.
  • Net charge at neutral pH of about −2: the aspartic and glutamic acid side chains and the C-terminus are negative, and only the N-terminus is positive.

Storage: why light matters

The first residue, tryptophan, is the amino acid most prone to oxidation by light and air. Keeping DSIP cold, dry and dark protects that residue:

  • Unopened, long term: −20 °C, protected from light.
  • Unopened, short term: 2–8 °C for up to several weeks.
  • Let the vial reach room temperature before opening, so moisture does not condense on the powder.
  • After reconstitution: keep at 2–8 °C, out of the light, and write the preparation date on the vial.
